And society is more focused than ever on small neighborhoods and local business, just like small towns. When the whole world seems like one small town, small towns are the learning lab, and small town entrepreneurs hold secrets to business survival.

Bio:Becky McCray owns a liquor store and a cattle ranch in Oklahoma. She is also a recognized expert in small business and social media. She and Chicago entrepreneur Barry Moltz are the co-authors of the new book Small Town Rules, sharing lessons useful for urban and rural businesses. She publishes the popular website Small Biz Survival on small town business, and she and Sheila Scarborough co-founded Tourism Currents to teach tourism professionals new ways of marketing their destination. Her professional life is an example of Small Town Rule #3: Multiply Your Lines of Income.

She has been featured in The New York Times, BusinessWeek, and Entrepreneur Magazine. In 2011 and 2012, she was named a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer.Her presentations on small town business and social media have taken her from Dodge City, Kansas, to London, England. From North Dakota to Texas, and Washington State to New York City, she’s spoken to more than 100 events, including two previous Social Media Tulsa conferences. Her hometown of Hopeton, Oklahoma, is home to fewer than 30 people.

Social Media Tulsa Conference welcomes Randy Macon.  Started following Randy a while back.  He claimed he was too shy to speak at a previous event, but watching tweets from an event where Randy spoke about Non-profits and social media, I knew he’d shaken off the shyness.  He Rocked!
Randy’s Topic: ”Influenceability”
Nonprofits are embracing social media as an extension of fundraising efforts… but are our approaches short-sited? Perhaps an important benefit of building networks through social media is the opportunity to develop (and mobilize) key influencers to help spread your message. This session will explore ways your nonprofit can tap into the power of popular social media platforms to share your story and encourage others to do so as well. Bring your laptop and your login’s for your organization’s Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Facebook accounts for some hands-on fun!

Bio: A native Oklahoman, Randy K. Macon graduated from Kingston High School and went on to earn a B.S. from East Central University and a Master of Human Relations degree from the University of Oklahoma. As part of his graduate work focused on program evaluation and research in the nonprofit sector, Randy co-authored several technical reports and presented original research at the 2007 national meeting of the American Educational Research Association. His master’s thesis Volunteer Engagement: Role Identity and Intent to Leave was published in 2011. Randy is currently working on an interdisciplinary Ph.D. specializing in philanthropy, also at OU.

For five years Randy served as a member of the program staff with the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation (July 2007 – July 2012). During this time Randy focused primarily on grantmaking activities related to education reform and youth development in Tulsa. As a champion of education, Randy worked as part of the community team that brought Teach for America to Tulsa in 2009 and also served on the steering committee for the Any Given Child collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Randy joined Grantmakers for Education in 2011 and was appointed to the organization’s 2012 Braintrust Advisory Committee.

Randy is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma Class 25, Leadership Tulsa Class 40, and was named as one of the 2012 Achievers Under 40 by The Journal Record. A former chair of the Tulsa Funders Roundtable, Randy co-taught a Saturday enrichment class at KIPP Tulsa and was a member of the Tulsa Jaycees for several years. He has been a member of the twittersphere since 2007.

Ruth Ann’s path to becoming a social media guru began when she accepted the Marketing and Sales Manager position for large Ski Resort in New Mexico. With infinite ambition and a creative mind, Ruth Ann launched the resort’s first social media campaigns.

After nearly four years of increasing the ski areas revenue through her non-traditional and imaginative online marketing ideas, Ruth Ann was recruited by a high-end lodging property in Telluride, Colorado to head their Sales and Marketing Department in 2006. As the Director, she single handedly launched their breakthrough into the social media market. After surpassing all expectations, the hotel’s management company, recommended Ruth Ann to build a social media standard for the company to benchmark for use worldwide.

After a long stint in Telluride, Ruth Ann moved to the Chicagoland area after marrying an Illinois native in 2010. Not wanting to lose her as a team member, the lodging property retained her as a freelance employee, now working remotely. In this time, Ruth Ann also had acquired several destination resorts in Colorado, Hawaii and the Caribbean which also continued to use her services after her move to the Midwest.

When word got around about Ruth Ann’s impressive resume and proven track record, the referrals began to escalate. Not only did she retain her small business clients, she was hired by large lodging companies, small local businesses, entrepreneurs and foundations to help them increase revenue with her marketing and social media concepts.

Well, here we are.  As event organizer, I promised after speaking last year, I wouldn’t put myself through speaking at my own conference…. Yet here we are.   The popularity of my Twitter infographic and the many conversations I have with people who still “don’t get Twitter”  has compelled me to share. We’ll talk about the tips and I’ll share examples along the way.

Cheryl will take the tips from her popular Twitter Infographic and provide real examples to help you get started.   The infographic just passed 51,000 views on Slideshare thanks to the many blogs who have re-posted it.  One of the first was Bitrebels.com in 2011.  The latest is the popular Edudemic.com site.

Danica Jones joins us for the first time as speaker at Social Media Tulsa Conference.  When Danica mentioned that she uses social media for her classes and has helped other businesses and educators use social media, we had to invite her to the stage.  
Danica’s topic:  Social Media and the EducatorEducators are slowly dipping their toes into the world of using social media as a classroom tool, but many are at a loss about which tools are best for which classroom, subject or student age group. This session will offer educators a basic overview of 5 key social tools for the classroom helping educators young and old understand:

1. What options exist in social media for educators
2.Which social tools are best for your classroom and assignments
3. Which age groups will best utilize social tools in the classroom
4. Creative ways to use free social media tools to teach

Bio:

Danica Jones lives and works in Tulsa, serving as the Social Media Director for local tech startup Quantus Creative. Originally from Los Angeles, California, Danica received a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2007, where she focused on new media, studio art and art education. Taking her love of sharing art into the classroom in 2005, Danica served as a Site Coordinator and Lead Instructor for Otis’ non-profit new media program for high school students, Otis Teens, Artists, Educators and Mentors (O TEAM). Her classes included Art in the Digital Age, Digital Filmmaking and other new media classes in which social media played a prominent role for both student and teacher. She served as a consultant for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Media Arts department as a new media expert while the district was developing their New Media classroom standards, and offered other instructors guidance and instruction on how to use so cial media and technology within the classroom. Her current role as Social Media Director has since continued to expand on her decade-plus relationship with social media, allowing Danica to create online social presences for local businesses seeking to connect with customers on a more personal and meaningful level.
